Replication and auditing for data mobility and governance with FlashBlade

Imagine a university-affiliated research hospital in the US, providing world-class healthcare and advancing medical technology through collaborative genomic, pharmaceutical and AI research.  The hospital’s clinical data is a vital resource for research.  The hospital collaborates directly with the university for genomic and AI research, and externally for pharmaceutical research.

The hospital requires 100% availability and high-speed performance for clinical data supporting hospital operations.  The same datasets are required by various partners for research, and copies of the data must be shipped across campus or across the globe in a reliable, efficient way.  Because patient privacy is tremendously important, and failing to maintain patient privacy comes with major financial and reputational penalties, the hospital must be able to prove that all non-anonymized datasets are only accessed by clinical personnel.  Distributed collaboration and strict auditing requirements prove to be a complex problem - and usually demand complex solutions.

These challenges aren’t unique to healthcare and medical research.  They exist in finance, manufacturing, and nearly every other modern enterprise.  IDC sums it up in this article about data modernization challenges in the restaurant and retail trades: “The challenge is that much of this data remains fragmented, delayed, inconsistent, or difficult to govern. As a result, organizations often struggle to turn raw information into timely, trusted, and actionable insight.”

Most of the data feeding modern workflows is unstructured.  Unstructured data platforms usually mean silos of information scattered across multiple sites or even multiple countries, exacerbating these modern data problems.  This is why enterprises are starting to expect more out of their unstructured data solutions and are increasingly looking to object storage for answers.

Storage architects need a platform that delivers asynchronous replication to make data available wherever that data is required, while providing auditing for configured S3 access operations to support enterprise accountability and security. So, what should enterprises expect from an object storage platform when their workloads are highly distributed, security-sensitive, and growing at the speed of modern threats?

Everpure FlashBlade rises to the challenge by delivering simple, scalable, and performant S3 storage. It also enables modern workloads with flexible multi-site replication.  Robust auditing capabilities, round out a leading object storage solution that gets data to where it’s needed without sacrificing security.  Let’s explore how FlashBlade’s object auditing and replication features securely solve modern data-driven challenges.

Data Mobility: Why Object Replication Matters

For many storage architects, the word "replication" immediately conjures thoughts of disaster recovery, insurance policies, and secondary data centers waiting in the dark. While recoverability and protection are critical, modern object replication must do far more. Object replication provides the data mobility demanded by the modern enterprise—getting datasets to the applications, analytics clusters, and research teams exactly when and where the business needs them.

FlashBlade supports asynchronous bucket replication to remote FlashBlade systems, Amazon S3, and S3-compatible on-premises targets. This flexibility allows architects to design data mobility strategies that fit their specific requirements, rather than forcing workloads to conform to infrastructure limitations.  FlashBlade’s multi-site writable buckets provide consistent, common views of datasets and enable in-place data collaboration between applications.  Utilizing active-active or active-passive patterns, or designing fan-in, fan-out, and cascading topologies, FlashBlade ensures that data can flow seamlessly across the organization.

Crucially, this mobility does not come at the expense of security. Replication traffic can be protected with TLS encryption in-flight, ensuring that distributed object data remains secure as it moves between sites or into the cloud.

When replication is viewed through the lens of data mobility, it unlocks several critical workflow architectures. Here are some examples.

Multi-Site Applications and Active Data Access

FlashBlade supports active-active asynchronous object replication, allowing applications to write across multiple sites while maintaining version ordering using timestamps. This is critical for architects designing geographically distributed services who want the performance and control of on-premises or hybrid object architectures rather than cloud-only designs. Because this utilizes eventual consistency, architects can design resilient applications that seamlessly access data across regions while tolerating brief synchronization windows.

Analytics and AI Pipelines

Analytics teams benefit immensely from multi-site object replication when ingest, processing, or geographic redundancy requirements span multiple locations. A rapidly growing use case here is navigating strict data sovereignty laws. For example, regulations like GDPR may dictate that raw, EU-sourced personal data cannot leave the region. Organizations can process and irreversibly anonymize that data on a local FlashBlade in Europe, and then use object replication to seamlessly ship the sanitized dataset to a centralized GPU training cluster in another global region. In this way, object replication acts not just as a DR feature, but as a compliance-friendly mechanism to place data exactly where the AI training work happens.

Backup and Rapid Data Protection

Replication supports backup-style and rapid data protection use cases by maintaining remote copies across FlashBlade, AWS S3, or S3-compatible targets. This preserves optionality for recovery—allowing organizations to quickly spin up workloads in a secondary site or the cloud if the primary site is compromised. When replication is paired with Object Lock or SafeMode-based protections, it can strengthen cyber resilience by helping keep the remote copy protected against deletion, overwrite, and ransomware..

Archive and Long-Term Retention

For archive-oriented use cases, customers require durable secondary copies, cloud-adjacent flexibility, and the ability to seamlessly move data to lower-cost targets. A prime example is the aggregation of anonymized datasets—such as sanitized research data, historical telemetry, or financial records—replicated to a central archive for future retrospective studies or next-generation AI training. Object replication to cloud and S3-compatible targets broadens the design options for these long-term retention architectures. These retention-focused designs become even more compelling when data mobility is paired with WORM-style controls to meet strict compliance mandates while preserving the future value of the data.

Data Observability: Why Object Auditing Matters

If object replication answers the question of where your data goes, object auditing answers the critical question of who touched it and what happened to it. Object auditing provides the authoritative, guaranteed record of the actions taken on a bucket.  As unstructured datasets grow in strategic value—powering everything from AI training to global financial modeling—they increasingly become targets for ransomware, data exfiltration, and internal threat actors.

FlashBlade object access auditing addresses this by capturing detailed S3 API activity. Rather than treating logging as a complex afterthought, FlashBlade natively routes these audit records into designated log target buckets. This granular visibility provides the ability to know exactly what operations are executed, successfully or unsuccessfully, on a bucket.  This ability is foundational for security and compliance.  It also offers the ability to trigger actions based on incoming data requirements.

Security Operations and Forensics

For Security Operations Centers (SOCs), time is of the essence during a suspected breach or anomaly. Object auditing provides the high-fidelity telemetry required to investigate suspicious access patterns, validate application behavior, and support rapid post-incident reviews. By seamlessly routing these audit logs into downstream SIEM platforms (like Splunk), security teams can proactively monitor their storage infrastructure alongside their network and endpoint data, ensuring no blind spots remain.

Compliance and Governance

In highly regulated industries, proving that data is tightly controlled is mandatory. Object audit logging gives architects a defensible governance story, proving exactly when, how, and by whom a specific AI training set or compliance archive was accessed. When paired with Object Lock, organizations can ensure that the audit logs themselves are strictly immutable, creating an unbroken, tamper-proof chain of custody for compliance auditors.

Pipeline Triggering

With the observability of bucket activity, comes the ability to trigger actions based on the logged bucket events.  A media company may want to transcode all incoming video files to another format.  By watching the audit events, a new transcode process can be initiated whenever a new .mp4 PUT occurs.  Or, remember the EU company above that needed to anonymize GDPR regulated data before shipping it out of the EU?  They could achieve this by watching for PUTs, then triggering an identity-scrubbing workflow that copies anonymized documents to a replication bucket.

Building a Secure, Mobile Data Strategy

Modern object storage must deliver on more than just scale, immutability and S3 API completeness.  It must also enable the diverse set of workloads that involve multi-site consumption and strict compliance and observability.

Everpure FlashBlade delivers on these requirements by providing flexible multi-site replication and auditing for S3 object and bucket access. By pairing these capabilities with Everpure FlashBlade’s diverse portfolio for optimized performance and capacity density, storage architects can deliver data exactly where it's needed, on the right tier of storage, without compromising security or governance.
