💡Technology Tip Thursday💡: Napster & Your All-Time Playlist 🎶
Hello everyone, the Thanksgiving holiday passed and another Thursday is here: a 💡Technology Tip Thursday💡 to be exact! This is a thread where we sprinkle tidbits of knowledge to the community on technology milestones that happened throughout the years during this month! This week we're bringing you some crucial musical tech history. Did you know that is was this month, December 7, 1999 The Recording Industry Association of America Sues Napster, the music file sharing service? The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) sued Napster in December 1999 for copyright infringement, alleging the peer-to-peer file-sharing service enabled the illegal distribution of copyrighted music. The lawsuit, which involved multiple record companies, argued Napster was facilitating widespread music piracy, leading to a landmark legal battle that eventually contributed to Napster's shutdown in 2001. Napster didn't exactly invent file sharing, but its peer-to-peer (P2P) created a massive, decentralized data ecosystem seemingly overnight. This legal battle eventually pushed the music industry fully into the digital age. It forever changed how we access and listen to music, leading us all to create massive digital libraries! So for our community question this week: What is your go-to song or songs and albums that you could listen to over and over? Share your memories below! It’s another Thursday and your 💡 Technology Tip Thursday 💡 is here! This month shares many technological milestones, but one extremely important one that changed the trajectory of computers is what we’ll focus on today. Did you know that this month in 1983, Bill Gates unveiled Windows as a graphical operating environment for MS-DOS at a press conference? There was no Microsoft Windows 1983 release; instead, the first version, Windows 1.0, was announced by Bill Gates on November 10, 1983, but was not released to the public until November 20, 1985. The 1983 date marks the public announcement of the project, not the commercial launch of the product, which was a graphical user interface (GUI) for MS-DOS. Windows is such an integral part of the computer ecosystems today, however there are numerous other operating systems that we’ve all tinkered with as well. So the question is: What was the very first Operating System (OS) or Shell you remember working with, and what was your favorite feature (or frustration) of that system? Share your memories below! Did you start with DOS, OS/2, maybe an early version of Linux, or something else entirely? Be sure to comment on your peers' replies!38Views1like1Comment
