How do you manage the risks and unexpected outages in critical data storage systems?

  • As a former customer of SAP any downtime of the SAP environment would cost my company millions of dollars.  Being part of an application team, most discussions around recoverability are done using the methods DBA's know they have - mainly application based replication and backup recoveries.  Sometimes storage based services aren't even considered because DBA's don't know what they don't know.   Quite often these days I'm having discussions around the benefits of storage based recoverability - whether it be snapshot based or through synchronous or continuous replication from ActiveCluster and ActiveDR.   I've had quite a few customers use storage based replication not as a replacement of application based replication but as a complimentary feature depending on the scenario.  IE: System replication for HA and ActiveDR for Disaster Recovery.
