In my chats with VMware on this (and we are pushing to get SAN transport supported) is that 1. not all vendors are as flexible on vVols as pure is so it may be more work on other vendors side 2. there is a bit more coordination of copies from the backup provider side because instead of 1 larger volume (or a few) it is 1000s which could lead to SCSI limit problems doing the offload.
