Backup and Restore FA Configuration

Hi All,

Purestorage has how to save or backup and restore configuration when an issue occurs?

For example, the software crashed and could not be used anymore. Once the problem was fixed, we restored the existing configuration file from backup.

  • good day, on both flasharray and flashblade the configuration is as simple as a list of commands, a lot like a network switch.  Usually customers would run "pureconfig list" to dump those commands and to back it up if desired.  It's also a part of the phone home data, so if you ever had issue pure support could provide the configuration if you don't have it backed up.

  • We do have customers who regularly backup the pure configuration with the Pureconfig list. As the others have said the array will never lose this config and you wont need it under normal circumstances. However some customers do take a "pureconfig -list" output occasionally to protect against a total  array replacement for example, you have a fire or flood and you trash your array. Once its replaced you replay the pureconfig output to speed up the recovery of your DC.

  • Good point Rob, the configuration would still only be the culmination of all of the configuration commands which would be run again to get to the same point that the "pureconfig list" was run.

I should have been more clear in my response being around not having a single file for download/upload to restore.

  • and it can totally be done if you'd like, but we don't generally have that problem you mentioned (aka you shouldn't have to worry about those kind of problems with pure) 😀

  • The Purity operating environment doesn't work that way, everything is stateless and the configuration is container within what we can the "apartment" which contains our NVRAM and DRM devices.

We do not have the concept of a single file configuration for export & import in case of failure, as the configuration is contained within the devices themselves and would persist outside of a software failure.
