So regarding vVols, is there still no solution for backing them up via FC?

This is the big problem hindering us in implementing it on a broader scale. Are there any whitepapers, deepdives or blogpost’s which describe the underlying problem? In my understanding, the „raw data“ (data-vVol) on the array is literally the same as one for a physical servers-so it should be „easy“ to „export“ via a snapshot arraywise. The only „special sauce“ is the configuration-vVol and the swap-vVol. I‘d like to understand this limitation, there must be some bigger underlying issue why this is not as easy as I’m thinking

  • In my chats with VMware on this (and we are pushing to get SAN transport supported) is that 1. not all vendors are as flexible on vVols as pure is so it may be more work on other vendors side 2. there is a bit more coordination of copies from the backup provider side because instead of 1 larger volume (or a few) it is 1000s which could lead to SCSI limit problems doing the offload.
  • There are not unsolvable problems but have been put off by VMware in favors or other endeavors
